Teens at the Library

Attention Teens!
Summer Reading Program registration has begun! Sign up before June 19th to participate. What this means is that you can read this summer - and get rewarded for it. How cool is that?

The children's Summer Reading Program has always been popular. We also offer a Teen program for those going into 6th grade-12th grade, an Adult program, and even a program for Babies! All programs have the same basic requirements for reading and their own reading logs for recording progress. Each group also has separate programs/events to attend throughout the summer.

Some Teen activities we are offering this summer are Geocaching (6/5) and art classes for those in grade 9 and up. Space and/or supplies are limited for the art classes, so be sure to stop in, call or email to sign up! We have Pysanky Egg Decorating (6/8), Basic Drawing: How to Draw a Dog Portrait (6/17), a Daisy Canvas Painting Party (6/19), and a Pinterest Craft Party (6/29). We will also offer a Minecraft After-Hours (6/19) night for those who have a Minecraft account and username.

July programs for Teens include Tween/Teen Create Night (7/1), Cupcake Wars (7/13), and a Spy Night (7/24). No registration is needed for these programs.

Learn about the history of American Comic Book Superheroes June 15th with Jerry Harrington, comic book historian and collector, and how to defend and protect yourself on either July 23 or July 30. These self-defense classes will be taught by Tim Main.

Join the fun at IPL this summer! No excuses. We look forward to seeing you at the library!

RAGBRAI In Independence!

If you've been around town lately, you might have noticed the extra wheels popping up on light poles and store fronts. RAGBRAI is coming, and the library is ready. Our Mini-Scientists have been biking around to find readers everywhere they go, and between the two of them have racked up almost a thousand miles. That's enough to do this years RAGBRAI race twice, and then some. Be sure to stop in at the IPL this Friday, when the Mini-Scientists come back home and the Summer Reading Program wraps up. Remember to log your reading until July 25th (and claim your prizes by August 2nd).

July 25th is going to be a big day so we'll have extended hours that day (open until 8 PM) so everyone can have a chance to drop by, and shortened computer times (20 Minutes) so everyone has a chance to get online. (See the library for full details) Hope to see you there!

Just Right Books! at the IPL

With the Summer Reading Program just around the Corner (Fizz, Boom, READ! starts June 2nd) we thought you might like to hear about our "Just Right Books."
They're a section of books that make it much easier for early elementary students and some preschool students to read at their individual reading level.

Just Right Books” were created with help from the former East Elementary. That means the library is using the same reading level system as many of the teachers, so you and your child may already know which books are best for independent practice.
Stop in anytime and take a look; and if you plan to visit the IPL for the Summer Reading Program Kick-off on June 2nd, you can check a few out when you register and pick up your reading log.

Remember, the Summer Reading Program is fun for all ages. We have programs for babies, children, teens, and adults; so Register Online or stop in at the Independence Public Library on June 2nd to register and pick up your Reading Log. Registration ends June 22nd but the fun lasts all summer long.
