Last Day for HERO Bingo Blackout Approaching!

The last day of August is coming up quick. That means that HERO Bingo Blackout is almost over, so finish up your Bingo Cards and get them into the IPL for your chance to win some books. If you've already finished up one card, you might still have time to do another. You can fill in one square right now by commenting below. We'll even get you started with a question. The Summer Reading Program is finishing up, so be sure to turn in your logs to enter for Bowl Prizes and Grand Prizes, and to pick up your weekly prizes before the deadline on July 31st.

Because on August 1st we'll start HERO BINGO BLACKOUT! During the whole month of August you can pick up a Bingo Card (for Children, Teens, and Adults) at the Independence Public Library and check-off the entire card for a chance to win a book. Remember to turn in your Bingo Card by August 31st.

The Last Day to Claim Prizes Is Almost Here!

Today is the last day to count reading days in your Reading Log! Be sure to claim your prizes and ice cream. July 31, 2015 is the last day to claim your prizes, and enter for the Grand Prize! The Grand Prize Winners will be announced on August 3, 2015. Good luck to all our readers!

Flying Monkeys, Magic and more!

Summer superhero activities continue at the library.  Our reading programs are filled with something for every one. 

Dan Wardell”s “Reading Road Trip” brought plenty of excitement and energy.  He told great stories, even one that had flying monkeys! I get pretty excited at catching flying monkeys!    Dan reminded us that eating right, exercise, and reading are healthy habits that we are to practice everyday.  We had a "Dantastic" time.

Some of the highlights from Children’s programs include , “Super ME to the Rescue”. This event focused on being yourself and using you own unique talents to be the best "you" possible.

Music by Mr. S & The Sandbox Band offered kids opportunities to touch, hear, and see a wide variety of musical instruments.

The” Super Hero Respect” program encouraged the use of imagination and reading.  

Magician Rick Brammer’s magic show inspired us to pick up a book and learn his secrets.  He had some great balloons to share too.

Rhyme Time and Story time continue on Thursday mornings.  These are always great fun.  Rhyme time is at 9:30 am for the 0-2 year olds and Story time follows at 10 am for the 2-5 year olds.  As you see below, SuperHeroes often share these mornings with me. 

This is a wonderful summer to join in the fun at the library.

 “Furry Friends”, an exotic petting zoo is coming to the library on July 22^nd @ 9:30 and 12:30.  Mark your calendars! 

Spy Night @ The IPL

Teens and Tweens in grades 5-12 can sign up now for the Independence Public Library's Spy Night. Participants will learn spy skills and make gadgets for their spy adventures. Spy Night is on June 24th, 2015 and begins at 5:00 PM. This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required. If you have any questions or would like to register, stop in at the library or give us a call at 334-2470.

Be Your Own Hero!

The Independence Public Library is hosting two Self Defense Classes taught by Tim Main. Both sessions are free and open to the public, but space is limited, so be sure to register. Teens and Adults can register for either the July 23rd session or the July 30th session. Both classes start at 6:30 PM, and space is still available. To register, stop in at the IPL or give us a call at 334-2470.

Furry Freinds At The IPL!

Join the IPL on July 22nd for Furry Friends, an exotic petting zoo. There will be two shows starting at 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM. There is no need to register, just stop in at one (or both) of the shows for a great time with the animals. Furry Friends is provided as part of the summer reading program "Every Hero Has A Story" and is free and open to the public

It's The Last Week of The Summer Reading Program!

Magician Rick Eugene!

Children of all ages can stop in at the IPL on July 15th for the Magician Rick Eugene! He'll be here for fun and magic at 9:30 AM. This program is brought to you as part of the Summer Reading Program, and is free and open to the public. There's no need to register, just come for the fun.

Cupcake Wars At The IPL!

Teens and Tweens head over to the Independence Public Library on July 13th for Cupcake Wars! This super decorating experience is open to teens and tween in sixth grade and up, and there is no need to register. The fun starts at 6:30 PM. See you there!

Superhero Day At The IPL!

Stop in at the IPL dressed as your favorite superhero (or villain) on July 9th, 2015 for Superhero Day! Costume wearing visitors will get a treat. See you there for a super day!

Superhero Respect Show!

Join the Independence Public Library this Wednesday for the Superhero Respect Show. A live show of fun and adventure with Desirae Payne about a girl named "Imogene" who becomes a superhero and defeats the evil Dr. Triple Brain Drain. Like our other Summer Reading Programs, the Superhero Respect Show is free and open to the public, and there is no need to register. Simply come and enjoy!

Room-by-Room Organizing!

Join the Independence Public Library on June 6th for Room-By-Room Organizing with Becky Esker from Get Organized! The seminar begins at 6:30 PM, and there is no need to register. Room-By-Room Organizing is free and open to the public, so stop in and escape the clutter!

Superhero Trivia Night!

Join the Independence Public Library for Superhero Trivia hosted by Adam Kurt. This is a family event best suited for those ages 10 and up. There is no registration, and it's free and open to the public. The fun starts June 30th, 2015 at 6:30 PM in the Community Room.

Mr. S. And The Sandbox Band @ The IPL!

Join the Independence Public Library for Mr. S. And The Sandbox Band on June 24th, 2015 at 9:30 AM. There will be music and fun activities with a variety of musical instruments. This Children's Program is presented as part of the Summer Reading Program, so there is no need to register and is free and open to the public.

Dan Wardell & The Bookmobile At The IPL!

Fans of Iowa Public Television's Dan Wardell will be delighted to hear that they can catch him live and in person at the Independence Public Library. The Reading Roadtrip with Dan Wardell will be here for two shows (9:30 AM and 10:30 AM) on Tuesday, June 23rd. This event is free and open to the public, and there is no registration required, simply come and enjoy the show.




After the show, be sure to check out the Digital Bookmobile. It will be here at the IPL and open for viewing from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Readers of all ages can discover how to use digital reading services here at the IPL.

Imagination and Rockets

The 2015 "Every Hero has a Story " Summer Reading Program
 has taken off. 

We started with the soaring program “Rockets Away”.

Jason from the Grout Museum was our guide.  Rockets of all sizes were launched from the library parking lot.  The largest rockets landed in various locations, somewhere out of sight!.   The interesting demonstrations were also filled with facts. Jason did say that if we found a rocket in our back yard, it would be ours to keep. 

“Drama time” at 9:30 on Friday mornings has been so much fun, even hilarious.  High school drama students have been leading this program.  We read 3-4 stories and then participate in warm-up activities used by the drama group.  We really use our imaginations by becoming the suggested people, objects or animals.  Drama time is throughout the month of June.

There are many more programs this summer and still time to register for the summer reading program.  If you are registered online but have not picked up your reading log, you need to do so by 5:00 pm on June 19^th.  All  registrations have the June 19^th deadline. 
All programs are free to the public and you do not need a library card to attend.

Canvas Painting Party At The IPL!

Teens and Adults can register now for the Canvas Painting Party on June 20th, 2015 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Jessica Ott will be at the Independence Public Library to give step-by-step instructions. This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required, as space is limited. If you would like to register or have any questions, feel free to stop in at the IPL or call us at 334-2470.

Summer Reading Program Registration Is Ending Soon!

The last day to Register for the Summer Reading Program is June 19th. You can still register at the library and online until then. We have a program for any age, and if you've registered online be sure to pick up your reading log.

Basic Drawing Class At The IPL!

Join the Independence Public Library on June 17th, 2015 for a Basic Drawing Class. Students will practice pencil drawing for dogs. You can bring a picture of your own dog or try one of the images provided. The fun starts at 6:30 PM, but space is limited, so be sure to register.
