Flutterby Bits

The Summer Reading Program, “Every Hero Has a Story”, is over for this summer.
Grand Prize winners names were drawn and notified.  All event extras (displays and
such) taken apart and  put away, but our Heros are out there in abundance!!!
Readers are everywhere!!

I find it heartwarming when readers of all ages are excited to share information about something that they have recently read.  Our youngest readers bubble over with information.

Rhyme Time and Story Time continue throughout the summer on Thursday mornings.  Rhyme Time at 9:30 am and is most suited for 0-2 year olds and their caregivers.  Story Time is at 10 am and is geared for 2-5 year olds.  We welcome all who want to join us.

HERO Bingo for all ages is the follow up challenge for the summer.  For every HERO card completed, your name is put into a drawing for a free book!

Fall programming is in the planning stage.  We are going to be able to work with the ISU Extension again this year.  I am pleased and excited about all the great fun and programming that comes with these girls.  Our first scheduled event, “Geology Rocks!” is on Wednesday afternoon September 16.  This will be an afterschool program.  Learning, along with fun, go hand in hand with programs presented by the ISU Extension.   Watch our website for more information.

Summer is slipping past very quickly.  I think it is all the extra “Super Hero” activity surrounding me.  I have been swept up by powerful energy all summer.  Keep reading!

Hope to see you soon,

Vonnie

Still Alice by Lisa Genova

Alice, a professor at Harvard has been forgetting things more often than normal lately.  She is eventually diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease.   Over the chapters she steadily declines from just forgetting about an upcoming appointment that day to forgetting who her daughters are.
It is heartbreaking reading about this strong woman, only 50 years old, slowly deteriorating.  She is such a strong woman in the beginning: a beloved professor and  very smart woman who people look up to.  She enjoys going for runs; eventually she is unable to go for a run by herself without her husband since she gets lost and will forget where her home is.  What makes this book even sadder to read is that Alzheimer’s is a real disease.
Still Alice was the library’s book club choice for the month of July 2015.

Penny Thoughts

Today marks the 56th Anniversary of the first minting of the Lincoln Memorial design on the Lincoln Head penny. The famous monument graced the back of the one cent coin from 1959 to 2008, and replaced the Sheath of Wheat design that had been used since 1909. The Lincoln Head penny now bares the Union Shield design, a reminder of the American Civil War.

Although you may not consider the Lincoln Memorial pennies antiques, most of them are still in circulation, there are a few that have achieved collectible status. Some are valued as high as a few thousand dollars, such as the "1990 Proof No-S."
